Exterior and interior painting / Portland

Prep first. Paint second.

Most paint jobs fail because the prep was rushed. We don't skip it. Wash, scrape, repair, prime, then two full coats, on houses across Portland and Clackamas County.

What a paint job really is

Five steps. Paint is only the last one.

Paint over dirt, loose paint or soft wood and it peels in a couple of Portland winters. The prep is most of the job, so it's most of our price.

  1. 1WashMildew, moss and dirt off, so the paint bonds to the house and not the grime.
  2. 2Scrape and sandEvery loose edge taken back to a sound, feathered surface.
  3. 3RepairSoft trim and siding replaced, gaps caulked, nail holes filled.
  4. 4PrimeBare wood and repairs sealed so the finish coats go on even.
  5. 5Two coatsTwo full finish coats, cut in by hand at every edge.

Outside

Exterior painting

Siding, trim, doors and decks. Done in Portland's dry months, when the wood is dry enough to hold paint.

Inside

Interior painting

Walls, ceilings and trim, with furniture moved and floors covered. Any season.

Cabinets

Cabinet painting

[Whether you paint cabinets, and how: sprayed in a shop, or brushed in place.]

Older homes

Lead-safe prep

Houses built before 1978 may have lead paint under the top coats. Disturbing it takes a state license and lead-safe work practices. [Oregon LBPR license number, once Tim confirms it.]

Quick check

Is it time to repaint?

Three questions about your house's outside. Look at the side that gets the most sun first.

Is paint peeling or cracking anywhere?

Rub the siding. Does color come off on your hand?

When was it last painted?

Your answer

Soon. Plan it for next dry season.

A few peeling spots at this age usually means the paint is near the end of its life on the sunny sides. Fixing it before it spreads keeps the prep, and the price, smaller.

Get a painting estimate A starting point, not a diagnosis. If paint keeps peeling in one spot, it may be water behind it. That needs a rot repair first, which our crew also does.

Questions people ask first.

When can you paint outside in Portland?

When it's dry and warm enough for the paint to cure, which is mostly late spring to early fall. We watch the forecast and move dates for rain.

How long will an exterior paint job last?

It depends mostly on the prep, the paint and the sun. Walls facing south and west wear out first. Good prep is what makes it last.

How many coats do you apply?

Whatever the surface needs, written on your quote: primer where the surface calls for it, and the number of finish coats.

Do you fix rotten wood before painting?

Yes. Paint over rotten wood fails fast. We replace soft boards and trim first and show you what we found.

Can I see the color on my house first?

Yes. Try colors with the tool at the top of this page, then we paint sample patches on your walls before you decide.
